Q: Can Equator "helpful" features be disabled, for
example so students have to calculate numeric
answers?
A: No, sorry. Equator is intended to help physics students
concentrate on the key features of physics. To us that
means that important but secondary aspects of problem
solving are automated. So hand-writing equations,
calculating significant digits, and calculating numeric
answers are automated.
Students are still required to formulate the problems, and
perform algebraic manipulations to drive to an answer.
Equator also gently nudges students towards a complete
solution in a standard form. For example it insists on
variable definitions and balanced equations before any
numeric answer is calculated.
We understand that in math courses, solving for the
numeric answer is an important skill being developed. We
would love to sell Equator to math classes, but suggest it
may be a different tool that they require.
